Update Ubuntu from command line

Instead of using the UI I do a lot of the administration from command line.  These are the commands you must enter a Ubuntu Linux Command Prompt to update/patch your server.

sudo apt-get update                # Fetches the list of available updates
sudo apt-get upgrade               # Strictly upgrades the current packages
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade          # Installs updates (new ones)

How to cleanup unused kernels from /boot

dpkg -l 'linux-*' | sed '/^ii/!d;/'"$(uname -r | sed "s/\(.*\)-\([^0-9]\+\)/\1/")"'/d;s/^[^ ]* [^ ]* \([^ ]*\).*/\1/;/[0-9]/!d' | xargs sudo apt-get -y purge

How to list empty Directories via powershell

I had a need the other day to list directories that was empty.  This code does just that.

(gci C:\Scripts -r | ? {$_.PSIsContainer -eq $True}) | ?{$_.GetFileSystemInfos().Count -eq 0} | select FullName

(replace C:\Scripts with the root directory)
Output example:

C:\Scripts\Empty Folder 2
C:\Scripts\Empty\Empty Subfolder
C:\Scripts\New Folder\Empty Subfolder Three Levels Deep
